Posttraumatic dementia

Abstract

In compensation proceedings we quite often meet cases of brain injuries leading in their sequalae to posttraumatic dementia or to other organic disorders. In expert reports it is not recommendable to use the diagnosis of organic psychosyndrome or encephalopathy as these terms are too general saying little about the character of the damage while the term dementia is defined quite clearly including the estimation of its degree according to the WHO guidelines.

The article presents a case of a 26-year old woman who suffered a severe polytrauma having been knocked down by a car. To assess her compensation claims it was neccessary to examine her by specialists in orthopaedic surgery, neurology, psychiatry, sexuology and clinical psychology.

Lectured in XXXII. (XVII. international) forensic-psychiatric conference in Cheb in September 2009.
