Abstract

Five years ago, the 1st Faculty of Medicine (Charles University in Prague) was awarded accreditation for PhD studies in Bioethics and, consequently, has gained experience in teaching Bioethics at the highest academic level. Actually, the program is based on several courses culminating in either an examining colloquium or by simple credit.

The opening course, lasting two semesters, is a critical one, since students who often miss philosophical training are introduced to this style of thinking. The entire program is reflected by the lecturers themselves, who are haunted by the Socratic question of how and even whether ethics can be taught.

This question has two facets: the first relates to a reliable and relevant firm basis for ethical knowledge, whereas the second one refers to the skill of correct moral decision making. There are good reasons to assume that, despite such a profound difference between them, the two facets have the same solution that is revealed in the presentation.
