Erectile dysfunction as a first symptom of generalized atherosclerosis

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

The most important fact about early recognised ED is its ability to predict a manifestation of coronary heart disease in 25 % of patients with ED within next 5-12 years. Thus, presence of ED should lead to early initiation of intensive prevention of coronary heart disease.

This review summarizes diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to patiensts with early recognised ED. Examination of vascular erectile dysfunction risk factors allows us to diagnose and to therapeutically intervene most of cardiovascular disease risk factors even before irreversible atherosclerosis lesions develop.
