Acute pain is an extremely unpleasant sensation. Although having a protective function, acute pain is also accompanied by a number of adverse effects, particularly when it is not treated appropriately.
The basic procedures are based on the WHO three-step analgesic ladder and the Czech Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (ČSARIM) guidelines for management of acute postoperative pain. Radical treatment of acute pain, the use of multimodal approach including combinations of analgesics, techniques of regional anaesthesia and appropriate adjuvant agents are all essential.
Continuous education of the attending staff is an integral part of management.
