Theory of planned behavior: development and application in sociology

Publication |
2008

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of application of the theory of planned behavior with special focus on its applications in sociology. The theory of planned behavior is based on critiques of different concepts of attitudes as predictors of actual behavior.

According to the theory of planned behavior, human behavior is influenced by three types of factors: attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control. The paper proceeds in two steps.

First, we present structure of the theory of planned behavior and we contrast it to some models of rational choice theory, showing that theory of planned behavior is superior by including social norms as explanatory variables. Second, we overview applications of the theory of planned behavior and we discuss some applications and extension of theory of planned behavior in sociology.
