Abstract

The occipital lateral plate mesoderm is a novel source for vertebrate neck musculature. The head musculature programme surprisingly continues caudally to the neck region and forms the avian cucullaris muscle – a homologue of mammalian trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles.
