Polyunsaturated fatty acids in supplements with plant oil

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2010

Abstract

Dietary supplements with plant oil are most often based on the oil of evening primrose or soya lecithin, characterized by high content of linoleic acid. Less frequent are preparations with the oil of sea buckthorn, rich in both linoleic and α-linolenic acids.

Oil of amaranth contains along with linoleic acid also squalene, known by its hypolipidemic effect. High content of linoleic acid was found in the oil of pumpkin and saw palmetto.

Beneficial effects of plant oils result, along with high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, also from the presence of phytosterols, carotenoids, flavonoids and vitamins.
