Abstract

Total pelvic exenteration for primary or reccurent rectal cancer growing into adjacent organs is defined as en bloc removal of all pelvic organs, ie aboral colon with complete or partial removal of the rectum, urinary bladder, distal ureters, pelvic peritoneum, parts of dams and their draining lymphatic system with or without resection of the internal iliac arteries. In men, removing the prostate and seminal vesicles and female internal genitals with vulvectomy is sometimes necessary.

The aim is to remove all malignant tumor tissues including the adjacent organs and regional lymphatics.
