Abstract

Case history depicts the case of thallium bromide poisoning in a suicidal intent referring to a young chemistry student. The significant exposure was caused by consuming of alleged 100 mg of thallium bromide together with alcohol.

Because he confessed the suicide attempt conducted by thallium bromide, he started to receive, immediately after the consultation with our Toxicology information centre, antidotes Radiogardase and Metalcaptase. The first urine sample, which indicated thallium concentration of 1460 µg/l (a limit is 5 µg/l), was taken on the 3rd day after intoxication.

The highest level of thallium - 4790 µg/l was determined on the 5th day after intoxication and since 6th day the concentration gradually started to decrease down to the level of 107 µg/l, which was found in 22nd day sample, when the antidote treatment was terminated. After 30 days of treatment the patient was transferred in a stabilized state to a psychiatric clinic.
