Abstract

Colorectal carcinoma is the 2nd most common malignancy in the developed world. Due to the long time span of its carcinogenesis, detection of pre-malignant lesions by the means of a screening programme is absolutely essential.

The basic tools of secondary prevention are tests for faecal occult blood and colonoscopy. The new technological possibilities of displaying the mucous membrane in vivo can help lower the risk of overlooking a colorectal neoplasm, key factors here are the level of colonic preparation and the time of extraction of the device.

Before commencing the adequate colorectal carcinoma therapy, it is necessary to further examine the patient using various scanning methods and to determine the stage according to the 7th TNM classification.
