APOA5 haplotypes determine triglyceride decrease after lifestyle induced weight loss in children

Abstract

Principal finding of our study, one of the largest in paediatric/adolescent obese patients, and the only one focused on APOA5 tagging SNPs, is the significant interaction between intensive and comprehensive lifestyle changes and APOA5 haplotypes leading to more favourable changes of plasma TG concentrations in carriers of the minor "risk" alleles when compared to the common homozygotes. Interestingly, post-intervention levels of plasma TGs were almost identical between these two groups.

This finding is of major importance suggesting that, at least to some extent, the impact of negative genetic predispositions could be overrun by comprehensive lifestyle changes.
