Refeeding syndrome

Abstract

Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is defined as severe disorder of fluid and electrolyte balance connected with some metabolic abnormalities. It occurs in malnourished patients undergoing refeeding, whether orally, enterally, or parenterally.

It can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Clinical features are caused by fluid-balance abnormalities, abnormal glucose metabolism, hypophosphatemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypokalemia.

In addition, thiamine deficiency syndromes can occur. It is stated pathophysiology, clinical manifestation, laboratory findings, management and prevention of RFS.
