Traveller Vaccinations

Abstract

Vaccination is a very efficient preventive measure for some infectious diseases in international travelers. Immunization can be divided into three categories: 1) the routine vaccinations (tetanus, pertussis, diphteria, poliomyelitis, measles, etc.) are applied in childhood as a part of routine health maintenance irrespective of international travel, these infections were eliminated in the Czech Republic, but their risk continues to be high in tropics; 2) the required vaccinations (yellow fever and meningococcal meningitis A, C, Y, W135 in pilgrims to Saudi Arabia) are compulsory for entry into some countries under International Health Regulations.

The recommended vaccinations comprise viral hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, cholera, rabies, tick-born and japanese encephalitis. Other vaccinations (influenza, pneumococcal infections, varicella) may be recommended for some groups of travelers (immunocompromised, elderly, people with chronic disease).
