Abstract

Plasma procalcitonin (PCT) is a highly specific marker for the diagnosis of systemic bacterial infections. PCT levels are usually low in viral infections, chronic inflammation or postsurgical states.

One major advantage of PCT compared to both inflammatory cytokines and acute phase proteins is its early and specific increase in response to bacterial sepsis.
