With increasing applications of radiation and nuclear technologies in industry, medicine and other areas, the amount of various transported radioactive materials including high-activity radioactive substances, radioactive waste as well as nuclear fuel is also going up. These activities are related also with stricter requirements with respect to ensuring the adequate safety of the transport of such dangerous materials where in the Czech Republic the national legislature is consistent with the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency and other relevant directives of the European Union.
The paper discusses issues concerning the current needs regarding the safe transport of radioactive materials and the minimization of the exposure under normal conditions as well as during the accidental situations. Special attention is paid to securing the entire protection of persons against harmful effects of ionizing radiation in line with the requirements enforced in the Czech Republic and in line with the latest recommendations in this field.
