Topical Corticosteroids for Use in an Extemporaneous Preparation and Examples of Suitable Formulas

Abstract

Within the last years many new pharmaceutical substances for extemporaneous preparation have been provided to pharmacies. This article addresses substances of the corticosteroid group available for magistral preparation – dexamethasone/ dexamethasone acetate, hydrocortisone/ hydrocortisone acetate, prednisone, prednisolone, triamcinolone acetonide, betamethasone dipropionate and fluocinolone acetonide and offers examples of suitable formulas.

Extemporaneously prepared componded drugs can better meet the doktor requirements for total amount prescription, in cases of unavailability of commercial products represents an alternative of prescription of customized product preparation, substance availability avoids compounding of registered topical products and some of the mentioned formulas can replace earlier available registered dermatologicals. Compounded (magistral) preparations can be economically interesting as they could be cheaper than preparations formulated fromcommercial registered products.
