Systemic antifungals in diseases of lower extremities

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2011

Abstract

Systemic antifungal treatment is indicated in refractory tinea pedis of moccassin type and onychomycosis affecting the nail matrix. Terbinafine is suitable for therapy of pure dermatophytic infections, itraconazole for yeast, mixed or mould infections.

Due to hepatotoxic potential and risk of drug interactions the systemic antifungals should be prescribed cautiously with regard to the risk/benefit ratio.
