The mycological laboratory of the Dermatological Clinic of the First Medical Faculty of Charles´ University in Prague keeps records of mycological cultivations since 1963. This allows an insight into changes of fungal spectrum in the population of one geographical region – the Central Bohemia Region.
We used these data to investigate possible changes in the ratio of Candida albicans : non-albicans and to correlate them with the use of modern triazole antifungals. The findings suggest that a shift from „albicans“ to „non-albicans“ in the skin specimens occurred as early as 1980, several years before the advent of the first oral azole, ketoconazole.
On the other hand, C. albicans is still dominant in mucosal specimens.
