Disordered nocturnal sleep initiation and continuity in somatic diseases- a symptom or comorbidity?

Abstract

Owing to their essence or symptoms, somatic diseases can lead to shorter duration and / or poor-quality structure of nocturnal sleep. Consequently, insomnia may present either as symptom of those diseases (obstructive and central sleep apnea, narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disorders, restless legs syndrome, sleep-related leg spasms and bruxism or as their comorbidity.
