Spasticity and its management

Abstract

The first part of the monograph discusses increased muscular activity which accompanies upper motoneuron syndrome. It explains conditions such as spasticity, spastic dystonia and co-contraction and clarifies pathophysiological circumstances of their development.

Further on, it focuses on comprehensive management of spasticity using local application of botulinum toxin in combination with rehabilitation. As for more serious spastic syndromes, it describes options for surgical management including intrathecal administration of baclofen.

In conclusion, it mentions specific clinical manifestations of spasticity in selected diseases and syndromes. The monograph presents specific therapeutic techniques of good use in clinical practice.
