Changes in cellular metabolism in patients with Alzheimer’s disease

Abstract

In our study, cellular respiration and mitochondrial enzyme activities in blood platelets were examined in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and compared to healthy controls. Our results indicate lower respiratory rate in intact platelets in AD patients.

It is proposed that decrease in oxygen consumption may participate in pathophysiology of AD, and respiratory rate, citrate synthase and complex IV in blood platelets could be speculated as AD markers.
