In the introduction, the effects of iron overload on various organs are described, focusing in particular, further in the article, on the primary groups of diagnoses for which chelation is indicated and especially on the group of patients indicated for chelation most frequently, i.e. patients suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome, who are receiving frequent blood transfusions.
