The causative agent of schistosomiasis are flukes of various species of the genus Schistosoma. I accordance with the clinical symptoms two forms of the disease are distinquished: urogenital (caused by Schistosoma haematobium), and intestinal (caused by S. mansoni, S. intercalatum, S. japonicum and S. mekongi).
Usually, the infections by human schistosomes are associated pathologies developing in the urogenital trakt, intestine and liver, however, of relevant importace are disorders developing after CNS or genital tract involvement.
