Scanning Laser Polarimetry in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Patients

Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of human immunodeficiency virus infection on the retinal nerve fibre layer. The thickness was assessed in 48 human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients using scanning laser polarimetry.

Results were compared to normal values and tested against factors suspected to affect the retinal nerve fibre layer. The mean value of the thickness was 57.65 +/- 6.18 mu m in our cohort.

No significant correlation between the retinal nerve fibre layer thickness and the immune profile or antiretroviral therapy was detected. However, a significant negative correlation between the retinal nerve fibre layer thickness with increasing length of human immunodeficiency virus infection was found.
