Science and Politics : German Humanities Institutes Abroad (1880-2010)

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Faculty of Social Sciences |
2013

Abstract

The book presents the unique network of German social science and humanities institutes abroad and the way it was built and developed from the 1880s to the last substantial reform in 2009. We focused on fifteen institutes based in Europe, the United States or Asia carrying out research mostly in history, but also in history of arts, archaeology, economics or orientalistics.

We analysed not only the development, publications and leaders of each institute, but also its co-operation with scholars and institutions from host countries. The research institutions were also monitored from the perspective of German foreign cultural policy where they play a rather unobtrusive but constantly very important role.
