Polar Year: Arctic - High Sudetes - Antarctic

Publication

Abstract

It presents long-standing intergenerational tradition of researching the polar regions at the Faculty of Science, Charles University: Zukriegel, Svambera, Hadac, Kunsky, Vana, Jenik, Komarkova or Sekyra etc. The conditions of tundra and polar regions can be also studied in the Czech mountains.

Therefore it was chosen to use in the subtitle of the exhibition the term High Sudetes (Sudeten), which are being dealt with by our colleagues for decades. A team of physical geographers from the Faculty of Science, Charles University (Engel, Treml, Krizek) studied glacial and periglacial forms of the Czech Republic relief.

The study of these phenomena has allowed the reconstruction of the appearance and evolution of our landscape from the ice ages up to present. It has also helped to gain paleoclimatic data which are used to examine current climate changes.

The exhibition contributed to the popularization of the action International Polar Year but it also pointed to series of global connections, to the fact that glaciers melting, climate changes and everything that is happening at the Poles is from many points of view also important for the Czech Republic. And on the contrary also from the Czech geological history we can explore polar areas and analogically derive and prognosticate other processes.

The exhibition was accompanied by documents and online presentations about polar areas from the 18th century from the collections of Library of Geography. They showed centuries old human effort to conquer the poles and reveal their secrets.

The photographs were added from the Daniel Nývlt Antarctic research. The timeline of conquering the both poles was also interesting.
