Recent research suggests that people tend to choose romantic partners based on the theory of positive assortative mating. According to this theory, individuals prefer partners with physical and mental characteristics similar to theirs.

Such relationships last longer than relationships based on opposite (complementary) characteristics. The main aim of this study was to determine whether level of similarity in personality traits among long-term homosexual partners is related to overall relationship satisfaction.

We hypothesized that couples with higher relative homogamy will report higher relationship satisfaction.
