"From Closeted Deviants to School Teachers," Lesbian and Gay Characters in Contemporary Czech TV Series
Abstrakt
The paper presented an analysis of gay and lesbian characters that appeard in original Czech television series that were produced since the 1989. There can be a "normalization" of gay characters in the series followed.
The first ones struggeld with their homosexuality as illness, unlucky faith, and the only drama to their characters was the coming-out. Whereas the current characters are taking regular job, seeming organic to the story of the whole series.
Nevertheless, if the gay characters are stereotyped they are in the story as someone bringing (sometimes embarassing) fun. Lesbian charaters are mostly abstent.
Results of the analysis are framed into the drama series genre context of the Czech Republic, and with the heteronormtive and gendered aspects of the culture.
