St. Gall's church in Vykáň and its original dedication to Saint George

Abstract

The paper investigates the patron of the church in Vykáň (Nymburk district). Although the church has Gothic components, there is no mention of an ecclesiastic building in this village in the most important medieval sources.

The fi rst mention of it comes as late as 1511 when it is referred to as the church of Saint George. In written sources from the fi rst half and beginning of the second half of the seventeenth century it is still known as St.

George’s (for the last time in a Register of Serfs according to faith from 1651). In 1671, however, it is referred to with a new dedication of Saint Havel, which it bears to this day.

This probably occurred in connection with a major reconstruction of the building in the 1650s and 1660s, after the end of the destructive Thirty Years War.
