Abstract

The main purpose of our study is to provide an integrated assessment of land-use patterns that have been induced in the Czech Republic since 1990. The results show that significant land-cover changes occurred in the regions with low economic performance because of continuing conversion from arable land to pastures.

Using the concept of welfare analysis and total economic value associated with land-cover change, we estimated that although there was an overall increase in MSA indicator, the change was associated with a welfare loss of almost 13 million EUR within 2000-2006, which may be attributed mainly to losses in regulating services of the ecosystems. Further, log-linear and weighted least squares regressions showed that the main effects of land use change driving forces are the change in economic scale and its regional structure.
