Abstract

Michael Billig in his book Banal Nationalism defines the traditional concepts of nationalism. He turned attention from the most extreme forms of nationalism to everyday life - to the signs that are not so visible, but persists longer than chanting of the nation during football matches.

Billig was interested in the signs of nationalism in everyday life, exploring language and print media. His work is another that seeks to show that the ideology of nationalism is socially constructed, by the media as well.
