In her article the author focuses on a less known area of specialized paliative care - on domestic artificial lung ventilation (DALV). It is one of the forms of healthcare provided to pacient in domestic environment.
Eligible patients are those who due to an illness or accident have lost their ability to breathe spontaneously and are dependent on respiratory support using a ventilation machine. The article briefly describes current state of providing DALV in the Czech Republic.
It explains the procedures of assigning a ventilation machine and the conditions under which can this treatment be realized in domestic environment. It presents an overview of the system of transfers of patients between individual intensive care types, indicative groups of patients suitable for DALV, summaries of DALV patients in the Czech Republic, it compares the expenses of institutional treatment with qualified estimates of expenses for domestic treatment.
Because of being integrated into the law system, we may expect additional support of expansion of DALV as one of the alternatives of provided healthcare. This trend will require erudite medical staff with specialization education in specialized paliative care.
