When to say stop: When ethical dilemmas in feminist research pass across a certain limit

Publication |
2013

Abstract

Every researcher has to deal with numerous ethical questions during whole research process. Ethical dilemmas are partially based on the theoretical perspective of the researcher.

My perspective in gender and entrepreneurship research was feminist approach, which is primarily based on rejecting value-free nature of research, and accepting political commitment to create a knowledge which could improve position of women in the society. The article presents this research which started autumn 2012.

I planned to do a complex case study of one project which helps women to start their own businesses. The biggest ethical problem which emerged in the process of research was unbalance between my values and values of organizers and participants of this project.

Double responsibility – towards participants of research and towards my scientific beliefs currently draws the research to an end. The main reason was the fact that it would be impossible to present and publish any results – any form of presentation would be against values of one or the other side.

The article shows that stopping research is one of the way how researcher could solve his/her ethical dilemmas.
