Abstract

Demographic changes pose unprecedented challenges for the system of health and social care and ageing of the population will continue significantly in the following years. The elderly population is very heterogeneous.

Geriatric patients, particularly fragile and dependent senior citizens, require a specific modification of health care, including acute, subsequent, and long-term care. The emphasis in care should be placed on evaluation of the functional status and support of self-sufficiency that is important for maintaining the quality of life in older age.
