The article presents original data on the prevalence of cognitive impairment in residential care facilities for seniors in Czech Republic. The study sample was composed of 626 residents of homes with a special regime (DZR) and 351 residents of homes for seniors (DS).
In comparison with data on the same subpopulation in 2007, the increas of dementia prevalence is observed in both types of services. Residents with dementia currently represent more than two thirds and more than 90% of residents respectively for the two types of services in comparison with 43 % in 2007.
Number of residents with severe dementia more than tripled since 2007 in the DS from the former 5 %, and an almost tenfold increase was observed in DZR. These patients with Alzheimer's disease, or other diseases causing dementia, especially in advanced stages, need comprehensive long-term care respecting both their social and health care needs.
