Contemporary philosophy of consciousness: a sketch of situation

Publication |
2001

Abstract

We introduce a contemporary view on the debate over an intriguing part of mental states conscious representations. There are three distinct views how to approach them: eliminativism (phenomenalism and representationalism.

We introduce basic principles behind each of them and take a closer look at the current debate between phenomenalists and repesentationalists. We show that their debate has lost empirical content and can’t be resolved on independent grounds.

Therefore it might be suitable to return back to often dismissed eliminativism that is proud of its naturalistic tendencies.)
