Abstract

Contemporary Czech historiography tells the story of Czech-nation building as being based on a single and universally shared national identity. I analyse the discourse on Czech nation in Protestant periodicals of the second half of the 19th century and conclude with an alternative story, which I find more appropriate to the evidence.

Instead of it being single and universally shared, there were several contending versions of Czech national identity. Czech Protestants formulated, advocated, and propagated their own version of Czech national identity, which they defined primarily in conflict with Catholic and Liberal alternatives
