Instructional Seminar: Growing Bananas and the Global Market

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2013

Abstract

The objective of this article is to create a model lesson focused on the global banana market for classes or seminars in four-year grammar schools. It is made up of three parts, detailing the three-phase learning model E-U-R.

The first part of the lesson involves students brainstorming to sum up their knowledge of bananas and the impacts of growing bananas. The second part has students view and critically evaluate a documentary film about the working and social conditions on banana plantations.

Finally, in the concluding portion of the lesson, students discuss alternate means of growing bananas and summarize their positions in a free writing activity.
