Abstract

The popularity of fright (mystery and thriller) literary and film tourism is based on popular culture and is induced by popular books, films and TV series. It appear that this field of dark (or macabre) tourism might represent the most profitable source of boosting the economies of European tourism destinations Young Europeans are most likely to be the crucial target group for fright (mystery and thriller) literary and film tourism solutions aimed at enhancing European cultural heritage and bringing it to the people.

Those people are the users of smartphones and tablet devices and their perception of the city as a cultural destination is largely shaped by their usage of these technologies. Mobile IT solutions including smartphones and tables and the user-generated and user-created software represent the most important aspect in using the cultural heritage potential of dark or fright tourism in European cities in order to create jobs and to promote economic growth.
