Source apportionment of size resolved particulate matter in European air pollution hot spot

The bilinear receptor model Positive Matrix Factorization was used to apportion sources of fine (PM0.15-1.15) and coarse (PM1.15-10) aerosol fraction in residential area Ostrava - Radvanice and Bartovice. The receptor model analyzed the datamatrix of 60 minute integrates of PM0.15-1.15 and PM1.15-10 mass concentrations, derived from correspond size distributions recorded by an APS (3321, TSI) and a SMPS (3963, TSI), aerosol elemental composition for 28 elements sampled by 3DRUM and analyzed by SXRF and OC/EC for PM0.15-1.15.

The sampling campaign was conducted from 26.1. to 21.2. 2012. Also, to assure local representativeness of the datasets recorded at mobile sampling station, the parallel small scale network measurement of PM2.5 by DustTrak was conducted with no statistically significant differences PM2.5 among the DustTrak monitors.

PMF was optimized for five factors for fine and four for coarse fractions. They were: – combustion of fossil fuels, combustion of biomass, traffic (exhaust and non-exhaust emissions), steel production and gypsum for fine fraction; and – traffic (re-suspended road dust and abrasion), industry, combustion of fossil fuels and steel production for coarse fraction.

The conditional probability function (CPF) was then used to identify the local sources and HYSPLIT long distance transport.
