Abstract
Despite postmodern distrust of traditional genre classifications the journalistic genre of commentary preserves most of its stable properties. It can be characterized as a combination of relevant factual information (news) with their subjective evaluations based on persuasive arguments.
The article concentrates on typical language means of commentaries as e. g. modalizations (hedgings), evaluative words, metaphors, similes, semantic oppositions as well as on the means of rhetorical argumentation and striking examples.
