The book focuses on West Berlin before and after building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 during the second berlin crisis. There is mainly the city in the attention, it's citizens and municipality politicy with consideration of specific problems of West Berlin.
The Cold War politics and the enduring tension between the East and the West draw only the context of the development of the city. The building of the Berlin Wall helped in effect to West Berlin - to it's stabilization of economy and society on one hand, on the other hand was strenghtened the connection to the Federal Republic of Germany.
The campagne for free and booming West Berlin was conducted by Willy Brandt. He profited from the development too, because his succsessful political steps in West Berlin helped him to run succsessful election on post of West German chancellor.
