Abstract

The Symbolic Shape of a Region and Regional Instruction: The Frýdlant Region. This article explores the topic of regions in geographical education.

Specifically, it examines possibilities for utilising a given region’s symbols to teach about that region. The first section discusses certain key terms and their importance in geographical education (region, regional consciousness and regional identity).

Next, the article focuses on these terms in relation to the symbolic shape of a region. The concluding section provides specific procedures for working with regional symbols.

Using the example of the Frydlánt Region, the author presents certain methods for utilising regional symbols during geography lessons. A brief assessment of the benefits of such an approach to regional instruction is provided.
