This work was focused on visualisation and comparison of the whole placenta proteome of non-smokers and smokers at term. Quantitative analysis of the proteome maps based on 2-D gels and SYPRO-Ruby staining revealed 19 spots with up- or down-regulated proteins in placentae of smoking women, which may belong to different functional protein classes.

This is the first report showing that proteomic methodology can provide important information about changes in regulation of protein expression resulting from adaptation of placenta to hypoxic stress.
