How are we to understand and distinguish qualities of mathematical acquirement? The authors show with help of a school relevant example how mathematical awareness can be classified. The classification uses linguistic methods to identify factors important for conceptual understanding of mathematics.

The analysis relates historical to theoretical aspects.
