Abstract
This chapter provides a comprehensive discussion of suburbanization in Prague's city region since the collapse of communism. The discussion begins with a general historical overview of urbanization processes and patterns.
Then we discuss suburbanization and sprawl in metropolitan Prague since the 1990s focusing on the changing balance in the distribution of residents within the city region, driven by the explosive growth of suburban zones and the subsequent increase in their share of the metropolitan population. Further, we address the growth of suburban jobs related to the development of new shopping, warehousing, distribution, and logistic centers around Prague.
Finally, we discuss the highly fragmented character of decision-making related to land development and urban planning in the Prague city region, which is administratively split in over two hundreds independent municipalities eagerly competing to attract new jobs and residents.
