Abstract
The term hybrid regimes represents an umbrella concept for identification of regimes in a grey zone between democracy and authoritarianism, which are also known as democracies with adjectives and authoritarian regimes with adjectives. There is a group of concepts (illiberal democracy, competitive authoritarianism and others), which has established itself in the dictionary of political science as dominant terms.
These concepts differ on issues as operationalization, definitions of democracy and authoritarianism. We can also observe a different usage of typologies and categories (classical approach, radial category and category of family resemblance).
The aim of the presentation is comparison of the most established terms in the discussion on hybrid regimes. For their usage is beside the knowledge of various types of categories important to differ among various definitions of democracies (procedural minimum, expanded procedural minimum, minimalist definition).
I will argue that for successful usage of the terms within the discussion on hybrid regimes is necessary to be aware of these differences to avoid their wrong application or conceptual stretching.
