The unusually flexible construct of Meta menardi spider

Abstract

Meta menardi is a spider of the family Tetragnathidae. Its English name European cave spider has many things speaks about his life strategy.

It inhabits mainly tunnels and natural caves, quite commonly, however, it also can be found in basements or in the deeper layers of stone rubble. The body size of more than one centimeter is one of the largest spiders in the Czech Republic.

Its presence can be underground very well observed through typical fibrous cocoon that often hangs loosely attached to the ceiling. Cocoon spun by the females and consists of a special type of fiber for the purpose of excluding spinnerets.
