Abstract

Opole Silesia can be understand as a border area in two ways: both geographically: it is situated on the former German-Polish frontier and culturally: Polish cultural patterns carried by the national standard are different from these that have created the basis for the group identification of Silesians. Szmeja argues that the best explanation model of Upper Silesia society is that one proposed by Michael Hechter: Internal Colonialism.
