Michal Burian, the leading expert in the gymnastic movement in the Czechoslovakia, focused in his study especially on the weltanschauung of the gymnasts and on their collaboration with the radical Sudeten German parties and organisations at the time of the First Czechoslovak Republic. For his work Burian analysed an admirable quantity of founts which are, however, very problematic.
Burian used mainly the materials of the state administation which value the activities of the gymnastic clubs very negatively. This black-white perspective is the axis of the whole book.
Furthemore Burian used in his text not only the language and the stucture of these founts, but the factual mistakes as well. In spite of all these problems, Burians book can be regarded as groundbreaking because it presents to the czech readers the less known aspects of the Sudetend German clubs.
